Welcome to Lifeway's Ministry Success Webinar Series. Lifeway exists to honor God and serve churches by designing trustworthy experiences that fuel ministry. For over 130 years, Lifeway has created resources to help church leaders carry out the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ. One of their latest initiatives is the Deep Discipleship program, designed to provide a comprehensive foundation of the Christian faith.

What is Deep Discipleship?

Deep Discipleship is a 24 week, two-semester theological training program developed for the local church. The program is structured to support long-term spiritual growth by walking participants through the entire story of Scripture, introducing essential Christian beliefs, and forming spiritual habits that will help them grow in their relationship with Jesus. Each week, participants discuss video teachings in community with other believers, which helps deepen their understanding of God and His scriptures.

"I've never seen an environment product more evangelistic energy than the Deep Discipleship program."

Kyle Worley

The Need for Deep Discipleship

Jen Wilkin, J.T. English, and Kyle Worley, the creators of Deep Discipleship, have observed significant gaps in Bible literacy and theological formation within the church today. They believe that many churches have failed to disciple their people in the essential resources of the faith. Studies like the State of Theology in the Local Church show that evangelicals' beliefs around key doctrines are not improving, highlighting the need for programs like Deep Discipleship

Program Structure and Content

The Deep Discipleship program is designed to be accessible yet challenging. It involves significant time in the Word and Christian doctrine, aiming to create contributors to the life of the church and community. The program includes:

  • Biblical Story: Participants walk from Genesis to Revelation, learning to understand and articulate the entire story of the Bible.

  • Christian Beliefs: Core doctrines such as the Trinity, creation, providence, sin, justification, and redemption are explored as they emerge in the Biblical storyline.

  • Christian Formation: Participants are asked to consider how the biblical story and core doctrines shape their Christian life and practice. This includes formative practices like writing prayers and completing an evangelism journal.

"I would not say that the content would be beyond a new believer or that it would be too simple for a mature believer."

J.T. English

Flexibility and Implementation

Deep Discipleship can be used in various church settings, including small groups, Sunday school, and women's ministries. It is suitable for both new believers and mature Christians, providing a synergistic content well that can help anyone grow in their faith. The program is designed to be flexible, allowing churches to adapt it to their specific needs and schedules.

Encouraging Church Leadership

For those excited about Deep Discipleship but lacking decision-making authority, starting the program in a living room or small group can build the necessary energy and proof of its value. This grassroots approach can help demonstrate the program's impact on church leadership.

"Since it is suitable for smaller spaces, in addition to a large format, there's nothing stopping you from giving this a try in your living room."

Jen Wilkin

Conclusion

Deep Discipleship is not just about intellectual depth; it aims to create a holistic transformation in participants, helping them grow in their knowledge of God's Word, their affection for God and His people, and their ability to engage missionally in the world. By raising the bar and committing to this program, churches can experience significant spiritual growth and renewal.
