Course Outline
Session 1: Introduction to the New Testament | Elizabeth Woodson
The story of Scripture—creation, fall, redemption, and restoration—tells the story of God and the story of us. The New Testament continues that story with the long-awaited Messiah, coming to redeem and restore God's creation and His people. Knowing the context into which Jesus came and ministered on earth helps us to grow in our understanding of both individual Bible stories and in God's sovereign plan. (45 minutes)
Session 2: The Gospels | Elizabeth Woodson
The four Gospels show us who Jesus was on earth—and who He still is today. They give us glimpses of His teaching, His miracles, and His devotion to the Father. We can follow in His example because we can see His life through the Gospels. Each one highlights a different aspect of Jesus's ministry and character. We can get a fuller picture of who God is through our study of the Gospels. This fuller picture leads us to worship and obedience because of His character as seen in the Person of Jesus Christ. (49 minutes)
Session 3: The Acts of the Apostles | Elizabeth Woodson
Luke's writing in Acts is a historical narrative with a theological purpose. In the story of the early church, the plot, the people, and the setting have a theological purpose. Luke wants us to believe that by the power of the Holy Spirit we are invited to join in on Jesus's continuing work of evangelism in the world. (41 minutes)
Session 4: Romans | Courtney Doctor
Romans paints a beautiful picture of salvation for us, what it means to be saved by the grace of God. Paul writes of both the truth about God, sin, and our salvation, and how we are to live in response to that truth. We are commissioned to live as those who are saved, sharing the good, unifying, hopeful news of the gospel to everyone. (41 minutes)
Session 5: Paul's Letters to the Churches | Dr. Eunice J. Chung
Paul wrote to the churches he helped plant to provide guidance amidst the culture of the day, false teaching, and persecution. He taught them how to be unified as the family of God, how to care for one another, and how to have joy no matter their circumstances. Most of all, Paul pointed to the truth of the authority of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ. (56 minutes)
Session 6: Paul's Letters to Church Leaders | Courtney Doctor
The main thing going on in these letters is that the church is being established. These letters are written in order to make sure that the baton of the gospel message would now be passed on clearly and faithfully. Godliness matters, the church matters, the truth matters. Paul asks his colaborers, and us, to guard them. (40 minutes)
Session 7: The General Epistles | Jen Wilkin
The General Epistles are pastoral letters, written to a specific people in a specific time and a specific place. They speak the truth to our identities in Christ and how we should live in light of our salvation. (48 minutes)
Session 8: Revelation | Jen Wilkin
Revelation is a book with many literary devices, which can cause trepidation in reading and studying it. However, the vision it conveys is one of hope and assurance: Jesus is reigning on the throne. Right now. (38 minutes)
