Course Outline
Session 1: Knowing God | Jen Wilkin
In this first session, Jen Wilkin introduces the course, explaining what we mean when we say "theology" and why it is important for us to study the Christian faith. She outlines the purpose of theology and talks through the necessity of theological triage in our study and fellowship. (40 minutes)
Session 2: God's Revelation | Jen Wilkin
How can we know God? How can we know what He's like and what He does? In this session, Jen explores both general and special revelation and how God makes Himself known to us. (30 minutes)
Session 3: God the Trinity | Dr. Christine E. Thornton
If theology is knowing God and growing in clarity of the Christian faith within the fellowship of the church, the doctrine of the Trinity answers the question, "Who is the God that we know? Who is the God in whom we have faith and in whom we have fellowship?" The answer to each of these questions is the Trinity or in biblical language—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (46 minutes)
Session 4: God's Attributes and Works | Jen Wilkin
Knowing God is key in our formation of theology. What is He like? How does He work? How are we like Him? Jen walks us through both the incommunicable and communicable attributes of God in this lecture so that we might better know the God whom we worship. (35 minutes)
Session 5: Humanity and Sin | Elizabeth Woodson
The Bible is a book about God, but as we learn about our Creator and Lord, we also learn who we are as humans created in His image. What does it mean to be human? What does it look like to image our Creator? How do we bear His image in a sinful world? (31 minutes)
Session 6: Jesus | Mary Wiley
When Jesus asked His disciples who they said He is, Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." These two truths are the most fundamental Christian confession and where we must start in knowing Jesus—God the Son who became flesh and dwelt among us. (61 minutes)
Session 7: Salvation | Mary Wiley
We often hear phrases like "asking Jesus into your heart" in church, but what does it look like to be saved? Mary explores the terminology, the doctrines, and the Scripture of salvation in this session. (56 minutes)
Session 8: Holy Spirit | Dr. Christine E. Thornton
While the Holy Spirit is a Person of the Trinity, our understanding of Him can at times be a little more complicated. In this session, Christy points to key verses in Scripture to get to know the Holy Spirit and His ministries. (41 minutes)
Session 9: The Church | Elizabeth Woodson
The church is not a building. It is a people in fellowship on mission. Elizabeth looks at key teachings and Scripture from the start of the church until the modern church. What we do in fellowship with one another is important and reflects our theology. (31 minutes)
Session 10: The Future | Dr. Christine E. Thornton
The goal of this lecture is to look at the new heavens and the new earth and how they are the culmination of the entire Bible, to understand that we are living in the end times now, and to look at a few views you may have heard about. (54 minutes)
Session 11: Group Panel | Jen Wilkin, Elizabeth Woodson, Mary Wiley, Dr. Christine E. Thornton
This last session of What We Believe: Theology 101 is a time to get to know the teachers a little better and hear how they use their study of theology every day. You'll also hear a little from them about maintaining fellowship and focus on mission even when they disagree or change their minds about a theological doctrine. (19 minutes)
